The origin of music is communication and education.

The essence of Philani’s music is just this; communication between their centres and their communities and now between ‘The Mothers’ and their audience. This record hears the Mothers choir together with urban production creating a cross-cultural fertilisation of music, education and awareness and a fresh angle on their rich vocal tradition.

The Philani Mothers formed a choir in 1986 and recorded in 1998 with Peter Raeburn a collection of accapella songs containing health and nutrition messages sung in Xhosa entitled ‘The Philani Mothers Lyrical Health Messages’. The purpose was to spread the Philani message within the community and it’s just one of the many projects initiated by the group to assist the women and children in the townships.

The master tapes of these songs have formed the backbone for this album. Our aim is to continue to spread the Philani's message and inspirational story through their music while generating awareness for their organisation and the countless problems which the townships in South Africa face. As well as to raise funds to enable Philani to continue its work and improve health awareness within the community, and beyond.

The Mothers is an album with a unique musical sound extolling the values of care, welfare and optimism. Peter Raeburn collaborated with fellow musicians and producers who when faced with such vocal positivity deriving from such devastating circumstances, created exciting and life affirming music.
